A Fan's Guide To Nashville SC's Preseason - Thus Far

Building Confidence

BJ Callaghan seems to have been able to impress his philosophy for how the team needs to be moving with and without the ball. Now he's ready to ramp up the intensity. Playing against lower division teams can provide an interesting challenge for top-tier sides like Nashville SC.

It may be preseason, but a team like Lexington SC, known for their penalty shootout win against One Knoxville SC in the USL Jägermeister Cup, was definitely looking for an upset.. They too are a young organization with their sights set on developing into a top-level contender.

In other words , they had a chip on their shoulders.

To beat teams like this the current iteration of Nashville SC has to be a team that carries a relentless attitude.

Because they had a piss poor 2024 season, NSC can only get hardware this season by winning the Open Cup or the MLS cup.

Of those two I think we can only really win the Lamar Hunt Open Cup this year.

No leagues cup. No CCC.

Sam Surridge' s 3 goals in the first 45 minutes of play assuaged my fear that we can easily dispatch teams in the USL and lower.

Forging a New Mentality

First Assistant Coach, John Bello , has spent most of this offseason reigniting a fire in the Coyotes camp. He is teaching them how to compete again. Last year was tough, and the guys definitely tried to compete, but there were too many games where they just looked deflated or lost.

The Coyotes need to learn how to use their fangs again and make opponents respect their bite.

This new idea of what being "uniquely Nashville" might actually be catching on with the new signings.

Tagseth is a workhorse who plays like there is no next game, and I'm loving it.

Getting it Right

Nashville SC's right side is transforming into a reaper squadron.

Look at this graphic created by the guys over at Six One Five soccer. This was the teams lineup in the first period of play against Lexington.

Mukhtar, Tagseth, Yaz, Najar are all anchoring down the right side of the pitch. I'm actually salivating at the types of passing sequences that this group can & already has come up with.

Last year it felt like Hany either didn't have the proper chemistry with his supporting cast, or he simply was just playing on another level that they couldn't keep up with. Now he's got real observable talent backing him up.

The right side of the pitch has impressed during this preseason run. Hopefully, this is a key piece for Nashville SC's return to relevance in 2025.

The Goalkeeper Battle

Joe Willis is still the undisputed number one. But it will be interesting to see if that changes throughout the season. The battle for number 2 has given us fans a reason to be excited. New signings Xavier Valdez and Brian Schwake both acquitted themselves nicely against Lexington, with Valdez getting a convincing diving save and Schwake saving a penalty from a sloppy Shaffelburg foul to keep the clean sheet on the day.

We all know that the team needs to figure out what the transition plan is for life after Joe Willis. The future is looking bright here.

Sam Surridge - The (Sometimes) Invisible Man

Sam Surridge got a 45-minute hat trick.

Sam Surridge was a Super Man.

I love seeing this guy score. Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like when Sam does score, it comes in bunches?

The only problem is that there were multiple times in the regular season last year where we turned to Sam during big season-determining moments, and he was nowhere to be seen. So while it's encouraging to see Sam banging three on a USL Championship team, I need to know that he will be Superman in the regular season too.

So Where Does This Leave Us...

After a disappointing 2024 campaign, Nashville SC looks to be building something special under BJ Callaghan's leadership. The preseason has shown us glimpses of what could be: a deadly right-side attack , promising youth prospects, solid goalkeeper depth, and a Superman who can still light up the scoreboard. The new signings are bringing both swagger and work rate, while the coaching staff is instilling a much-needed fighting spirit back into the team.

While preseason results against lower-division teams shouldn't have us planning the parade route just yet, there's genuine reason for optimism. BJ Callaghan's Vision for Nashville SC

BJ Callaghan just inadvertently set up the goalposts for fans to determine if his first full season at the helm of Nashville SC is a success or a failure.

He wants Nashville SC to be a team that scores 50 goals every season minimum.

50 goals.

According to Callaghan:

50 gets you to the playoffs. 50 means you're a competitive team. One that must be taken seriously when the ball enters the attacking third.

50 goals or bust.

This is BJ's first full season rodeo as the head honcho at any stop he's been in his coaching career.

He's had the full length of the 2024 offseason to assess the team's needs and communicate his vision to Mike Jacobs. The team has made multiple additions and subtractions. All in the hope that they have solved for X .

The only question left to answer for the fans is just what "X" is.

After a scoreless preseason draw with Charlotte FC, BJ Callaghan gave his remarks and answered a question that I've had for weeks. He was asked what formation he ran.

BJ Callaghan is apparently not much of a "shape" guy. This moment stood out. It felt like the first time I was hearing the real BJ and not the one that's been media trained to be likable so fans would feel comfortable after Gary was sacked.

Let's Do The Math...

Here's what I think we will see on BJ Callaghan's road to 50 goals this season:

Increased Patience in Possession ✅

Toward the end of 2024, Nashville started to change. It was hard to notice if you were thirsty for points like we were, but I saw it. The team started to slow down when they got to that attacking third. They started to think.

They were really looking for opportunities instead of panicking.

The results of this newfound patience showed through in our possession stats.

MLS.com's Matt Doyle wrote this on Sep 26, 2024:

" the average time of their possession sequences has climbed from the bottom third of the league into the top third. As such, they've collectively become a much more effective progressive passing team through midfield ."

I believe that new additions like Tagseth and Najar will surely reinforce this change in the team's attacking mindset. We may even get more gems in younger guys like Pacius if they are allowed to really look for goals and not instructed to blindly cross it into the box.

High Intensity Pressing:

Creating Turnovers in Dangerous Areas. Here is where Gary and BJ are somewhat similar. They rely on the opponent to make a mistake.

Here's the difference.

Gary was content to sit back and let the mistakes come to him through organized defensive play. Gary was a fisherman who didnt like to play with the bait (i mean ball) much.

BJ invites a little chaos with a higher line of engagement and encouraging more guys to get in on the fun.

More risk. More reward.

Edin Halilović from Total Football Analysis was quick to note that Callaghan's high-pressing system has already shown promising results, with Nashville making 22 more counter-pressing recoveries and 17 more high regains in his first six games compared to the previous six. This was of course in 2024 after BJ had completed his first 12 matches in charge of the Coyotes .

BJ Callaghan's goal is to force more turnovers in the opponent's defensive third and then consistently punish them for it. "Consistently" being the most important part of this equation.

Getting The Fullbacks in Play ✅

I will always be convinced that wingbacks who can dribble and find critical passer are better than speedster who don't do anything but streak up the side of the pitch. See latest Andy Najar footage:

BJ seems to be placing his faith in guys like Najar who has shown a smooth touch and ability to dribble past defenders. He's also looking at Juliane Gaines for his speed and passing techniques. The way BJ described his preferred style for the Charlotte FC game made it seem as if he looks at the fullbacks to provide a passing lane for the midfielders or even as another option to help Hany, Edvard, and Sam find goals.

Okay, so far we've got increased patience leading to higher possession and a higher (riskier) line of engagement leading to more turnovers closer to the goal.

What else does BJ think he needs to get 50 goals out of this team?

Hany Mukhtar. Duh.

It's not rocket science.

At one time Hany Mukhtar was the reigning MLS MVP and dubbed the most efficient player in MLS history.

What went wrong?

He had too much of a target on him. He was too out in the open. Pair that with a lack (or absence) of competent midfield play and you've got Hany in the middle of no man's land. The last edition of nashvile only had one game plan – hold the defense down long enough for Hany to score.

These recent signings leads me to believe that BJ plans to find ways to cover Hany's tracks.

It shouldn't be obvious anymore who is going to take the shot for Nashville. Everyone should be making runs. Everyone should be finding ways to get behind the opponents. Everyone needs to get in on this new attacking philosophy.

All of these guys have been brought in because they are confident enough with the ball at their feet in the midfield to slow down the game and find the next FORWARD pass.
